How Anchor and Handoff Create Movement Paths Between AI Conversations
When you want to continue an AI conversation in a new window or a different AI, what should you use as your starting point?
Copying the entire conversation is too long, and moving only the last response may omit important premises. Creating a new summary could change the criteria of the original judgment.

Anchor is the starting point, and Handoff is the process of moving from that starting point to a new conversation.
Anchor Is the Reference Point for Resuming Thought
Anchor is a feature where the user directly selects a point they want to resume from later.
That point does not need to be simply the last message. The moment a problem definition became clear, the moment an important judgment was made, or the moment you want to record the current state before moving to the next step can all become Anchors.
Anchor is not a parent folder that contains Pack or Saved.
In Graph View, Anchor exists as a node at the same level as Pack and Saved. It is connected to surrounding context but does not own other nodes or have a hierarchical structure beneath them.
This distinction is important. If you view Anchor as a parent container, you might bundle all past conversations under one fixed conclusion. 5BY.AI views Anchor as a single reentry coordinate.
Handoff Is a Movement Relationship, Not a Memory Node
Handoff is not a node that stores separate memory content.
It represents the fact that the user moved from a selected Anchor to the starting point of a new conversation, and the process of that movement.
Conceptually, it is as follows.
Anchor → Handoff → Start of new conversation
If Anchor shows where the departure happened, Handoff shows which conversation that departure point connected to.
So Handoff itself is not a structure to be stored again or selected as an important memory. Handoff is a movement relationship between Anchor and a new conversation.
Opening a New Tab Does Not Automatically Continue
5BY.AI does not automatically insert past context just because the user opened a new tab or new conversation.
Automatically inserting past content could mix in previous context even when the user wants to ask a completely different question. The system would also have to decide which Anchor to use as the basis.
Handoff must be explicitly executed by the user.
- Select the Anchor to continue from.
- Execute the continuation in a new conversation.
- The recorded coordinates and related flow are assembled for the new start.
- The user continues thinking in the new conversation.
In this process, the choice belongs to the user.
Handoff Does Not Create New Conclusions
Handoff's role is not to re-evaluate or summarize past records.
It does not re-select the most important content, does not automatically blend similar conversations, and does not calculate new importance.
Handoff prepares the recorded context to be continued based on the Anchor selected by the user.
This may include the flow around the reference point, recently connected conversations, and the starting information needed for the current new conversation. But Handoff does not turn past judgments into new answers.
In the new conversation, you can follow the previous judgment as is, rebut it, or re-examine the premises.
It Is Also Needed for New Conversations in the Same AI
Handoff is not a feature needed only when moving to a different AI.
Even within the same AI, when conversations get long or topics diverge, you may need to start a new conversation. Re-explaining all the context of the existing window is difficult, and moving only the last response can make the starting point unclear.
Using Anchor and Handoff, you can record where you continued from even in a new conversation within the same AI.
- Create an Anchor at the judgment point of the existing conversation.
- Execute Handoff in the new conversation.
- Subsequently formed Pack and Saved connect to the new flow.
- In Graph View, you can see the movement between the previous conversation and the new one.
When Using Multiple AIs, It Maintains the Center of Thought
Depending on the task, you may use different AIs.
In one AI you might explore ideas, in another you might review counterarguments, and in yet another you might handle documents or code.
Looking only at each service's conversation list, this process appears as independent records. Anchor and Handoff record from which judgment point you moved to another conversation.
Here, the center is not a specific AI but the user's flow of thought.
5BY.AI is designed to continue context across supported AIs, but it does not judge which AI produces better conclusions. The user selects the conversation suited to their purpose and executes Handoff with an Anchor as the starting point.
Why Anchor and Handoff Must Be Distinguished
If you combine the two concepts into one, the reference point and the movement become mixed.
Creating an Anchor might automatically start a new conversation, and executing Handoff might create a new memory node each time. Such a structure makes the user's intent ambiguous.
5BY.AI separates the roles.
- Anchor: the user's declaration that they want to resume from here
- Handoff: the relationship that a movement occurred from this Anchor to a new conversation
- New conversation: the new flow of thought formed after the move
Thanks to this distinction, the user can create an Anchor and continue later. Creating an Anchor does not mean immediately moving.
The Purpose of Movement Is Continuity, Not Copying
Handoff is not a feature that duplicates an entire past conversation.
The core purpose is to ensure the user does not lose what point they had thought to previously, and can continue that flow in a new conversation.
When Anchor records the starting point and Handoff records the movement, the user can later answer the following questions.
- Where did this conversation start from?
- What judgments were inherited?
- At which point did I move to a different AI?
- How did my thinking change after the move?
- Can I go back to the previous point?
Anchor is the point that holds onto the past, and Handoff is the path from that point to a future conversation.
